5 reasons why blockages occur in the drain.

Blocked drains are a frustrating and nasty problem that many of us have encountered. You flush, but instead of the water running down, it starts to rise. But what causes these problems, and is there anything you can do to prevent blockages?

Hair down the drain

One of the most common causes of drain blockages is hair build-up. Every time you wash your hair in the shower or comb it in front of the sink, there is a risk that strands of hair end up in the drain. Eventually, the hairs tangle together and form a hairball that causes a blockage in the drain. However, this is easy to avoid. By regularly cleaning the drain, you can avoid unpleasant blockages. By installing a hair trap, you also make it easier for yourself to keep the drain clean.

Food scraps

Never pour food scraps or grease down the drain. When grease enters the drain, it solidifies over time and can form a thick coating on the inside of the pipe that obstructs the flow of water. Scrape plates thoroughly and do not pour grease or coffee grounds down the drain to reduce the risk of a drain blockage. By regularly pouring boiling water down the drain, you can prevent blockages in the pipes. Hot water dissolves grease, and in this way it can help prevent blockages in the pipes.

The roots of the trees

Tree roots can be a cause of drain blockages. The roots naturally search for water sources, and over time they can penetrate the drain pipes through small cracks and holes. As the roots grow, they can completely block the pipes and thus impede the flow of water. If you suspect that a blockage has occurred due to roots, it's worth contacting a professional plumber to examine the pipes.

Structural problems

Sometimes there are structural problems that cause stoppages in the drainage system. Damage to the inside of the pipes, incorrect installations or the slope of the pipes can cause blockages. In such cases, it can be difficult to diagnose and solve the problem yourself. Book a plumber who can investigate and solve the problems.

Foreign material in the toilet

Summary: Drain blockages are a common problem, but there are ways to prevent and resolve them. By avoiding flushing hair, food debris, hygiene items and grease down the drain, as well as paying attention to any structural problems and roots, you can minimize the risk of blockages. Remember that regular maintenance and cleaning of your drain system can help keep it free of blockages and in good condition.
